Why do shortcuts so often beat perfect calculation?

Origin

From Greek heuriskein, “to find, to discover,” the same root as heurēka, “I have found it,” the cry attributed to Archimedes. A heuristic is, literally, a thing that helps you find.

Bounded rationality

Real decision-makers lack the time, information, and computing power to find the best option. Herbert Simon's insight was that they do something smarter than failing at optimization: they satisfice, searching until an option is good enough, then acting.

Simon, a Carnegie Mellon polymath, called this bounded rationality and built it against the economics textbooks of his day, which modeled people as perfect calculators. The work reshaped economics, psychology, and artificial intelligence, and won the 1978 Nobel Prize in economics.

Real minds do not optimize; they search until something is good enough, then act.

A heuristic is not a lesser answer. It is the answer you can afford in time to use it.

Limits and context

Shortcuts have systematic failure modes. Tversky and Kahneman showed that common heuristics produce predictable biases, and a rule tuned to one environment can quietly mislead in another. The skill is knowing which environment you are in.

The later heuristics-and-biases program did not overturn Simon's point; it mapped the price of the shortcuts he showed we cannot live without.

03 · Moment

Heurēka in the bath

Syracuse, Sicily, third century BC; told by Vitruvius two centuries later

King Hiero of Syracuse suspected his goldsmith had cut the gold of a votive crown with silver, and asked Archimedes to find out without destroying it. In Vitruvius' telling, Archimedes noticed the water level rise as he lowered himself into a bath (a submerged body displaces its volume) and ran home naked shouting heurēka: I have found it.

The caveat

The anecdote comes from Vitruvius, writing two centuries after the fact, and appears nowhere in Archimedes' own surviving works. Later scientists have doubted the details, since the measurement as described would be delicate to the point of impractical. Treat it as a parable with a real physics lesson inside.

The insight turned an impossible question into a measurable one: compare how much water the crown displaces against equal weights of gold and silver, and the alloy betrays itself. Vitruvius tells the story in a Roman engineering treatise to illustrate what discovery looks like: a shortcut that makes the untestable testable.

Heurēka is the ancient Greek perfect tense of heuriskein, literally “I have found (it),” from the same root that gives us “heuristic.”
