Origin
From the Czech robota, “forced labor, drudgery,” the compulsory service serfs owed their lords. The playwright Karel Čapek popularized it in his 1920 play R.U.R.; by his own account, his brother Josef suggested the word. It reached global use within a few years.

The servant that turns
The template of the machine that overthrows its makers is not a later Hollywood invention. It is the plot of the very play that gave us the word. Čapek's robots are artificial workers, made to labor cheaply and tirelessly; treated as tools, they eventually revolt and wipe out humanity. Naming our machines after forced labor and then imagining them rebelling was a single act. The dream of tireless servants and the fear of their revolt were born together.
R.U.R. (Rossumovi Univerzální Roboti, or Rossum's Universal Robots) premiered in Prague in 1921 and was quickly translated worldwide. Čapek's robots are closer to what we would now call androids, grown from synthetic matter rather than built from metal, but the word attached to mechanical workers and stuck.
The story that gave us the word “robot” is a story about robots destroying us.
How we name a technology encodes how we fear it, and we named ours after slaves.
Limits and context
Čapek's warning was about exploitation and dehumanized labor as much as about machines; reading R.U.R. purely as a prophecy of AI misses that its robots are a mirror for how humans treat workers. And the play's biology-based robots differ sharply from the mechanical and digital machines the word now describes.
A century on, the same doubled hope and dread runs through every debate about artificial intelligence: the promise of tireless capability shadowed by the fear of losing control, exactly the pairing Čapek staged in 1921.

Elektro at the World's Fair

At the 1939 New York World's Fair, the Westinghouse Electric Corporation unveiled Elektro, a golden humanoid robot roughly seven feet tall, built at the company's Mansfield, Ohio, facility in the late 1930s. Operated by voice commands that triggered relays, Elektro could walk, move its head and arms, count on its fingers, and deliver a vocabulary of hundreds of words from stored recordings. A robotic dog, Sparko, later joined the act.

The caveat
Elektro's abilities were largely theatrical: its speech was prerecorded and its actions were triggered sequences, not autonomous behavior. It is best understood as a promotional spectacle, not a working general-purpose robot.
Elektro was engineering as advertisement, a demonstration of Westinghouse's electrical prowess and a public's-eye vision of the mechanical servant the word “robot” had promised since 1921. It performed for crowds rather than doing any real work, embodying the gap between the fantasy of tireless machine labor and the reality of what machines could then do. Genuinely useful, programmable industrial robots would not arrive on factory floors until the 1960s.
Elektro was marketed as a “Moto-Man,” the showroom's attempt to make the servile machine friendly, decades before anyone worried it might not stay friendly.
